Sony argues that if this timeline continues, the PS6 launch will occur before Call of Duty and other popular Activision games, which could cause consumers to abandon the PS6 in favor of the Xbox One and reduce competition in the market. Even though the application has been heavily classified, we may infer that Sony is projecting a release date for the PlayStation 6 that comes after 2027.

Microsoft has provided some intriguing details regarding the future of the console business in a lengthy statement to UK regulators on the proposed Activision merger. Microsoft claims that the next generation of video game consoles will release in the year 2028. If this holds true, the current generation of gaming consoles, the Xbox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5 would have an eight-year lifespan, in line with past generations. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are part of Generation 8, which is gradually dying since the end of 2021. By 2028, Gen 9 will have run its course, and Gen 10 will take its place. While there is nothing major to factor in, it seems like with the current console cycle still in its “cross-gen” phase, we agree that eight years is a reasonable time frame for a new generation of games. The great console hardware is out there, and we hope that the developers have a chance to use it by 2028.
