New Sony PlayStation 5 With Detachable Disc Drive Hitting Shelves Next Year
The PS5 upgrade, the 1200 Model, was just rolled out, It comes with a full internal redesign. With this version, many are hopeful that Sony is heading closer to giving us a proper slim redesign. However, even with this redesign, we might be getting a more significant revamp of the Playstation 5 somewhere in 2023. At least that’s what Tom Henderson tells us. He’s delivered goods to Sony hardware in the past and that’s his hunch. At the moment, Sony offers two PlayStation 5 SKUs – one that comes with a drive and the other without one. In the newer model, the detachable disc drive will plug into the USB–C port on the back of the console. Thereby, giving rest to users complaining about the aesthetic being ruined. It’s expected that the disc drive will be sold in bundles. It could be sold separately as well, meaning it’s up to the players if they want to make it a part of their setup or not. However, the new detachable disc drive could entail that the new iteration of the PlayStation 5 will be slimmer and lighter, which is something Sony has been trying to implement effectively with its latest PS5 models. It’s understood that Sony is anticipating producing 18.5 million units of the new PlayStation 5 console in FY 2023 and only 12 million units of the A-C chassis consoles as they begin to be phased out. Sony Interactive has reported that as of June 2022, the company has shipped over 21.7 million PlayStation 5 consoles. If these production figures are to be believed, it suggests that the company is expecting a significant ramp-up in the next couple of years as hardware components start to become more readily available. – Tom Henderson Apparently, this newer version is codenamed the “D chassis” internally. Previously models have been called the A, B and C chassis models. According to Henderson, we could be getting a detachable Blu-ray disc drive, which could be a huge improvement from the current model. The 2023 model is also expected to go through another weight reduction bringing us a sleeker version of the PS5. However, other changes concerning the model remain hidden. We don’t know how much truth there is to Henderson’s claims. It is plausible considering that many players find the two-SKU approach to be cumbersome. Moreover, players won’t be the only ones to benefit from the upgrade since Sony could be able to solve their supply issues once and for all with a more refined machine.
